Oberlin became the first school in more than 10 years to successfully defend its wrestling team championship in the state tournament held at Salina on February 26 and 27.  It was the fourth time since state wrestling meets were introduced in 1930 that Oberlin had annexed the team championship. Wichita East is the only other school to win two titles in succession, accomplishing the feat in 1931 and 1932.

In retaining its title Oberlin piled up 44 points to out distance an eight team field. Norton was second with 33, while Wichita East was third with 31.

Four individual championships played a major role in the Oberlin team victory. Norton and St. Francis each collected two individual titles, while Wichita East, Newton and Wichita North claimed one each.

Three individual winners at last year's meet were victors again:  Fraker, Oberlin 120-pound champion, moved up into the 133-pound class and captured that title, while Vernon, Oberlin, 1942 winner in the 133-pound class advanced to earn top 145-pound honors. Topping, St. Francis, retained his championship in the unlimited class.

One additional weight class, the 175-pound division, was introduced this year.

After a lapse of one year, Northwest Kansas regained state wrestling supremacy as Oberlin scored the Northwest's fifth team triumph in six years at Oberlin on February 27 and 28.

In winning th title, Coach Dale Duncan's Oberlin grapplers collected three individual championships, scored two seconds and a third in piling up 29 points. Wichita North, defending champion and lone team to break the Northwest monopoly since 1937, was second with 24 points. St. Francis finished third with 19 and Wichita East was fourth with 17.

The trio of individual winners which accounted for the major share of Oberlin points were Fraker in the 120, Vernon in 1933, and Simpson in the 138 pound class. Wichita North and St. Francis annexed two individual titles, while Colby, Hoxie and Norton accounted for one each.

Ending the four year domination of the Northwest Kansas League schools in the state wrestling meets, Wichita North nose out Wichita East by one point n this year's meet at Wichita on February 28 and March 1.

North was awarded the state title after a recount of results added two additional points to the North total which had been overlooked in the first compilation showing East the winner.  St. Francis, defending champion, tied for eighth.

This year's triumph was the second time North grapplers have captured the state championshp, the initial title having been gained in 1933.  East, Hutchinson and North each won two individual weight championships, while Atwood, Newton, Oberlin and Hoxie annexed one each.

After a lapse of a year, St. Francis regained state wrestling supremacy in the 10th annual tournament at Oberlin, February 23 and 24.  It was the second state championship for St. Francis in three years and marked the fifth straight year a northwest Kansas school has either won or shared the title.

The largest field in the history of the state champiionship competed in this year's meet, one hundred and twenty boys competing from 16 schools. Eleven schools figured in the final team standings.

Hutchinson annexed the most individual weight titles, three Salt Hawk grapplers winning championships.  St. Francis and Wichita East each captured two, with McPherson, Oberlin and Wichita North claiming one each.

Three of last year's winners returned and turned in performances worthy of second straight championships.  Bob Fraker, Oberlin, repeated in the 95-pound division; Bob Johnson, Hutchinson, duplicated the feat in the 125-pound class; while Gene Hammond, Hutchinson, 145-pound champion last year, moved up to the 155-pound class and captured that event.
